The Vital Role of Parents in Supporting the Education and Wellbeing of SEND Children

thefarmingmother

Parents play an essential role in the education and wellbeing of their children, particularly those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Long before formal services identify a child’s needs or referrals are made, parents are often the first line of support. They are there, tirelessly advocating for their child's needs, adapting situations, and overcoming daily challenges to ensure their child thrives and has access to necessary resources.

Many parents may not recognise the extent of their efforts as being different from those of any other parent until they connect with others in similar situations. Despite the challenges, they continue to navigate the complexities of securing support, often without acknowledgment of their invaluable contributions.

When parents reach out for assistance, they frequently encounter waiting lists or are directed to various resources, yet they persist in their quest for the best advice and support for their child.

The process of obtaining an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or Disability Living Allowance (DLA) can be overwhelming, especially after years of uncertainty about available resources. Parents routinely advocate for their children, compiling significant amounts of evidence that may be overlooked or not fully considered by service providers.

The reality is that parents are on duty 24/7, providing unwavering support to their children. It is crucial that their voices are heard and that they receive the necessary support themselves.

The emotional toll of constant advocacy can lead to burnout, and a struggling parent can negatively impact their child's wellbeing.

we must recognise the importance of empowering parents and ensuring they are supported in their journey. By listening to their insights and providing the resources they need, we can create a more effective support system that benefits both parents and children alike.

Together, let’s work towards a more inclusive and understanding environment where parents are valued partners in their child’s education and wellbeing.
